Corps news – Embassy 67

We say thank you for the music

Arguably the most powerful diplomatic weapon departing US Ambassador Matthew Barzun deployed during his term in London was sharing his love of British and American popular music – and it was a weapon of mass distraction that we have thoroughly enjoyed.

We will cherish memories of the July 4th concerts with the likes of Duran Duran, Squeeze and Bastille (almost as much as we enjoyed leafing through the Ambassador’s own vinyl collection).

Over the past four years Winfield House has hosted gigs with greats such as Annie Lennox, Sir Elton John, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, where guests took turns to spin the decks.

Barzun’s reputation as an avid music collector earned him an invitation to appear on BBC Radio Four’s Desert Island Discs, where he shared his life story through thoughtful musical moments.

Now, as his parting homage to Britain, Barzun has appealed “for a little help from his friends”, the British public (via Twitter), to help him compile a playlist featuring music or bands from all the places he has visited across Britain, from Aberdeen up in Scotland to the Isle of Wight. The response has been phenomenal, the perfect swansong.
