Culture – Embassy 46

Catch it while you can!

A group of lucky Ambassadors were given an excellent tour of the first retrospective of works by American realist painter George Bellows to be held in the UK, organised by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in association with the Royal Academy of Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

A contemporary of Edward Hopper, Bellows was renowned in his time but died aged just 42. His canvases and lithographs documenting gritty New York at the turn of the 20th century, with its influx of poor immigrants, building works and illegal boxing dens, capture the energy of a great city in the making.

Royal Academy of Arts, Burlington House, Piccadilly W1J 0BD. Exhibition ends 9 June.
