Consuls debate challenges of 21st Century
Consular work is a priority for foreign ministries globally, a reason why the Embassy Consular Conference attracted a capacity audience of 200 diplomats from more than 100 missions to discuss common challenges.

Consuls were trained in detecting and preventing fraud in travel documents from the National Document Fraud Unit and heard how new biometric technologies can help prevent stolen passports being used by criminals.

A lively session was also held on the Immigration Act 2014 where delegates debated the impact of the new Immigration Act 2014 on their migrants and students.

Consuls also heard from a panel of experts including the Home Office, the National Crime Agency and charities on the Modern Slavery Bill and new strategies to combat human trafficking and assist victims.

Technology to engage with diaspora communities was also a topic for discussion and consuls had the opportunity to hear from the head of the FCO’s Legalisation Office about the legalisation of foreign documents.

The conference also connected consuls to consular service providers who can assist them meet the growing demands of their profession.
