Tories to beef up FCO

The Foreign Office will return to the heart of Whitehall under a new Conservative government, while some money intended for international aid would be diverted to a new military "stabilisation force".

Under plans recently unveiled by Shadow Security Minister Dame Pauline Neville Jones, the Tories envisage the creation of a National Security Council, chaired by the Prime Minister, with the Foreign Secretary as deputy chair.

Baroness Neville Jones, an ex diplomat and former chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, said a Conservative government would end the Labour-style "sofa government" in which she claimed the FCO's knowledge and expertise had been bypassed.
