FCO charmed by snake

A team of experts from the National History Museum was called in to the FCO to restuff Albert, the 120-year-old resident anaconda in the Foreign Office’s library, at a cost of £10,000 to the taxpayer. The snake is thought to have been presented by a Bishop, in what is now Guyana, to the Colonial Secretary in the 19th century.

Defending the bill when the FCO budget is being squeezed, an FCO spokesperson said: “We will not be constricted, nor will we scale back, in our dedication to preserve this historic national treasure.”
