Cyprus on the move
This month the President of Cyprus inaugurated the spacious new High Commission in St James’s Square to much fanfare.
In his inaugural address, President Demitris Christofias said the new High Commission was “a home for which every host would justifiably feel proud”.
The new premises is substantially larger and more suitable for the mission’s expanded responsibilities as an EU member.
The house-warming also saw the return of a familiar face to London, that of recently-departed High Commissioner George Iacovou, who is now Presidential Commissioner working towards the settlement of the Cyprus question.
The mission’s capabilities were put to the test the following day when its first press conference was held to brief journalists on the President’s talks with Prime Minister Gordon Brown which focused on the Cyprus problem.
At the conference, President Christofias hailed the meeting as a “turning point” which signalled a “new era in British-Cyprus relations.”
