Diplomat swims the Channel

A dip takes a dip

Braving icy 14C water (without a wetsuit), stormy weather and one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, Mike Guy of the Bahamas High Commission and a team of five other intrepid (insane) swimmers conquered the English Channel.

Their first attempt was postponed due to the wind and unseasonable 20ft swells forcing them to wait for a second weather window.

Departing from Dover at a very unsociable 02.23 in the morning, the team swam the 36km stretch in one-hour shifts guided by a pilot boat and reached Calais in just 11 hours and 4 minutes, beating an Indian Airforce team! Who needs the Olympics when diplomats can achieve such feats of endurance?

Mike put himself through this gruelling test to raise money for Samaritans of Central London and he has already notched up £2118 and counting.
