Envoys mourn slain ambassador

Floral tributes and messages of condolence were sent to the Russian Embassy as the London diplomatic community came to terms with the shocking assassination of the Russian Ambassador to Turkey.

Ambassador Andrey Karlov was shot in the back by an off-duty policeman while carrying out his official duties and opening an art exhibition in Ankara.

Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko said Karlov was an “outstanding diplomat” and he was “shocked and appalled by his brutal murder”.

Speaking to Russia Today, the Ambassador said the incident would not harm Turkish-Russian relations or derail their joint efforts to combat terrorism.

The incident raises concerns that heads of mission in other capitals may be targets.

Ambassador Yakovenko said the UK security services were “doing their best” to prevent attacks had foiled several attempts, but there was “growing pressure” and that the Russian Embassy in London had stepped up its security.
