MPs demand scrutiny of political appointees

The Foreign Affairs Committee has demanded that it carry out advance scrutiny of political appointments to senior diplomatic and consular posts, similar to confirmation hearings carried out in the US.
MPs used the example of the possible recall of Baroness Amos as High Commissioner to Australia after only a short term to illustrate why political appointments could be problematic. They also support an amendment to the Constitutional Reform and Governance Bill that would limit to three the number of political appointments.
