North Korean Ambassador makes rare public appearance

As tensions increased on the Korean peninsula, the North Korean Ambassador to Britain, Hyon Hak Bong, gave a speech to the Communist Party of Great Britain defending Pyongyang’s actions as a response to the “provocations” of the US and South Korea.

Hyon described the North’s threat to launch a nuclear strike on the US as a “justifiable and reasonable response” to US aggression. He also said the DPRK’s third nuclear test in February had served as a “strong war deterrent”.

The Ambassador’s appearance dispelled rumours that he had departed London after DPRK authorities had urged foreign diplomats to leave Pyongyang.
