From Friday 20 November all Schengen visas issued in the UK will be biometric.
Those applying for a Schegen visa will have to appear in person for biometric enrolement. This will involve having their fingerprints scanned and a digital photograph taken.
Biometrics enable faster identification and can counter identity theft, allowing a faster visa application process. Biometric data will be stored for five years so if an applicant reapplies within that time frame, the data will be re-used and no new fingerprinting will be needed.
At the border, Schengen border control officers will use the VIS to check the identity and verify if the visa is genuine. Quick, easy and reliable biometric checks will help to prevent visa fraud and faster immigration clearance.
