High-flying women gathered at Winfield House on International Women’s Day for a discussion on overcoming obstacles to equality.
On Mrs Barzun’s guest list were big hitters from the world of digital commerce, including Facebook vice president Nicola Mendelsohn and Digital Commissioner Martha Lane Fox.
French Ambassador Sylvie Bermann and Baroness Ashton represented diplomacy, while CNN’s Christiane Amanpour and the BBC’s Emily Maitlis gave perspectives from the world of the media.
Talks revealed that getting women into senior positions isn’t just the right thing for society, it makes good business sense. As Ambassador Barzun tweeted: “Shareholder returns are higher in countries where more women hold senior management positions.”
The day ended with a performance of the feminist anthem ‘Sisters’ by Annie Lennox.
Across town, Argentine Ambassador Alicia Castro hosted a meeting of 14 female Ambassadors. Currently the proportion of female heads of mission in London is just 16% of the total. “That is not good enough,” the Ambassador told Embassy. “We need to do more.”
