Top London envoys recognised for diplomatic skills

Envoys who have excelled in diplomacy were honoured at this year’s Diplomat of the Year Awards, as voted by their peers.

Embassy magazine salutes the Ambassador of Kuwait and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps for winning top honours as Ambassador of the Year for the Middle East. In a year that has seen turmoil in the region, the Ambassador has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, using his vast network and knowledge of the issues to bring people together.

The High Commissioner for Antigua and Barbuda Dr Carl Roberts was a deserving winner for the Americas and for his excellent work as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Commonwealth Secretariat.

A popular choice was the Ambassador of Finland HE Mr Pekka Huhtaniemi, who won for Europe, as was the Ambassador for El Salvador HE Mr Werner Romero who won for the Central and South American region.

Top honours also went to the Ambassador of Kazakhstan HE Mr Kairat Abusseitov for Eurasia; the High Commissioner for Singapore HE Mr T Jasudasen for Asia and High Commissioner for Cameroon HE Mr Nkwelle Ekaney for Africa.

Sohair Younis (Egypt), was a deserving winner of the Woman Diplomat of the Year.

Maria Monteiro (Portugal) was recognised for her contribution to the diplomatic press corps. Under her leadership as DPAAL President, the association has flourished.

The dynamic Ms Susana Garduno-Arana (Mexico) was honoured as the Young Diplomat of the Year.
