IMO | World Maritime Day
World Maritime Day
For his first World Maritime Day, Secretary General Kitack Lim pushed the boat out with a reception attended by the great and good in the maritime world.
It’s been a good year: Finland’s accession to the Ballast Water Management Convention triggered its coming into force to help halt the spread of invasive aquatic species.
The Secretary General also made good on three of his pledges since taking office. Firstly, to inspire women to enter the maritime industry when Captain Radhika Menon became the first woman to win the Exceptional Bravery At Sea award. Secondly, to inspire the next generation of seafarers, the IMO hosted an exhibition of artworks from the Mexican National Children’s Painting Competition on the theme of The Child and the Sea. Finally, to raise the maritime world’s profile, the IMO’s #AtSeaForAll campaign on the International Day of the Seafarer reached nearly 13 million people.
