Raising Our Voices, Together

Diplomats for Equality is opening a new chapter, writes Fernando Gutierrez Champion, Cultural, Communications and Press Counsellor at the Embassy of Mexico to the United Kingdom
It is with great pride that we at the Embassy of Mexico take on the role of Chairs of Diplomats for Equality, a leadership role handed over by German Ambassador Miguel Berger and our colleagues from the Embassy of Germany.
Alongside Jessica Cuapio Mercado, and under the unwavering leadership and steadfast support of our Mexican Ambassador, Josefa González-Blanco Ortiz-Mena, we are deeply honoured to continue the powerful legacy of Michael Fuchs from the Embassy of Germany and Jonathan Sauvé from Canada’s High Commission. Their vision, leadership, and tireless dedication have been fundamental in building this dynamic and supportive network of Missions committed to equality, inclusion, and human rights. We are determined to build on this momentum – strengthening our collective impact and expanding our visibility.

A brief history of Diplomats for Equality
For those in our diplomatic community not yet familiar with Diplomats for Equality, this association was formed for Vienna Pride 2017 by like-minded foreign missions, as a decentralized, non-profit group of diplomats, embassies staff, international organizations, and their families and friends. Since its inception, it has expanded globally, with growing support from diplomatic communities across capitals, including the UK group, which was coordinated by the Canadian High Commission until 2023 and by Germany until 2025. As of May 2025, Mexico has taken over the coordination of D4E.
The network unites missions in a common goal: making a visible global statement of support for the LGBTIQ community, combating discrimination, and promoting human rights. Notably, D4E participates in Pride Marches worldwide, including a record-breaking 500 participants in the 2024 London Pride Parade. The group’s efforts culminated in the Joint Statement issued during Pride month, with more than 40 Heads and Deputy Heads of Mission signing in past years. Looking ahead, D4E continues to grow, with Mexico now coordinating, and more diplomatic missions and participants expected in future Pride events.

Mexican milestones
On a personal note, I am filled with immense pride for the progress Mexico has made in advancing LGBTIQ+ rights and implementing an impactful inclusive foreign policy. To me, this is more than just a professional milestone; it reflects a personal journey and the transformation of our nation into one that fully embraces diversity, equality, and human rights for all.
As a gay man, I never imagined I would one day find myself in a position to make such an impact – especially from within the heart of the diplomatic community. Like so many others, I grew up in a world where it was hard to imagine a future where I could be both proudly Queer and professionally fulfilled. I feared that my sexuality would limit the opportunities available to me or the leadership roles I could aspire to. But as I embraced my identity, I discovered that it wasn’t a barrier, but a strength that would shape my journey.
However, the advancement of rights – rights that have allowed me to become who I am – is not always linear. It is a journey that requires constant effort to secure and expand. As part of those ongoing efforts, we are committed to nurturing initiatives that help us amplify LGBTIQ+ voices and celebrate our diversity. We have proudly participated in Pride in London since 2022, launched an annual Queer Art Exhibition, and organised cultural events that provide a platform for Queer artists and ideas to thrive. These initiatives are just a few examples of how we continue to create spaces where LGBTIQ+ expression is not only welcomed but celebrated.
Queer Art
Our Queer Art Exhibition in particular, has become one of our most cherished initiatives. Last year, we received over 60 submissions from artists of all backgrounds and nationalities. What matters most is that this platform is open to all – whether emerging or established artists, Mexican or not.
It’s a celebration of Queer brilliance and creative expression, and we are thrilled to announce the call for our fourth edition this year. We warmly invite our fellow missions and cultural institutions to join us – whether by submitting works, inviting artists, or helping amplify the work we do together.

Standing up
On the other hand, LGBTIQ+ communities are facing renewed challenges globally, and it is now more urgent than ever that we, as diplomats, stand united. When we march together in Pride, host exhibitions that give Queer artists a platform, or endorse joint statements reaffirming our commitment to advancing LGBTIQ+ rights, we send a powerful message that resonates far beyond our countries. We stand up for those who cannot yet safely stand for themselves.
I often think back to that young gay kid who doubted he would ever belong in the diplomatic world. Today, he stands proudly with allies and leaders from across the globe, raising his voice – not alone, but as part of a powerful and growing community.
So, this is a call to action. Join us at Diplomats for Equality. Now is the time to make a difference. Now is your chance to help create a world where no one has to fear being who they are. Together, we can be that difference. Together, we can ensure that diplomacy reflects not just tradition, but transformation.
We warmly invite you to stand with us. If you’re ready to make a difference, to raise your voice, and to be part of a collective force for inclusion, please reach out to join our group or take part in our initiatives.
With pride,
Fernando
